What I was trying to unpack with Robot In the GRIT post is the permeability of Alternate Realities into our physical reality.
Definition for Alternate — will be —- not our physical, touchable, gravity based reality.
Examples: worlds found in BOOKS, Movie Theaters, Video Games, television, radio.
Example of permeability: After being sick/couchbound and binging on Zelda for a week, I exit my house with the overwhelming compulsion to whack bushes and planters with a stick to collect rupees and coins.
The example I gave Robot the other day was assuming the wait stance of my in-game avatar while in line at the grocery. Little things make life more fun.
Snap-shot moment in boardroom, being told by a woman-who (doesn’t know me, has not seen my resume, has no idea how or why I am affiliated with the organization) makes an inaccurate generalization about my education level based on what she assumed was my income level…
And she actually gestured directly at me…
My GUI shifted, turning the ring around my avatar hp bar red. “I’m being targeted.” out loud as I would in skype to my squad. …. Incredulous. Before snapping back and realizing > I did say that and it was out loud.
There was this beautiful moment of permeability where, although awkward, abrupt (Accurate/Appropriate) In Context… >> In a boardroom. Part of my mind was hoping my faction didn’t hear that, >>> because this woman could not handle what’s going to rain down on her!

About the art: Fashion!!
Before the game introduced Fashion, we were all in armor. There was this awkward stage between levels of last levels breast plate clashing with current levels boots. If you got the materials you could train-up Tailoring and make your own armor.
Of course I did!
FACT: Most of my faction’s house armor/weapon/potions banks were hand(mouse) crafted by me.
Herbalist, weaponsmith… maxed out! (It’s one of the best parts of the game. Knowing you have mastered something.)
And
When your craft is That Good, you have a higher chance of enchanting the items crafted.
If it glows, you know.
Really Direct HINT: Magic items glow.
All lvl 10 and glowing,
gets the side eye from players that have been there a while (5yr-game-vets, Founders)
Fortunately fashion changed that, hiding the armor under traditional social garb. Because being low level on a pvp server, you are always a target, even more so if your armor glows. So you learn… right?
Without the fashion I was DAZZLING!! (I kid you not.) Disco-ball meets lightning storm in a plasma cloud of effervescent star dust.
So I admit I became fascinated with the Fashion. Not a thing I get to indulge in the Real world, Looking at, trying on, changing colors, mix and match.
(This kid got 2nd hand-hand-me-downs >> if lucky. Tox sisters would destroy “things too nice for me” before passing it down. I was very punk rock in grade school with all the safety pins and stitches. It’s own little special torture session every school year as the oldest gets bags and bags of brand new school clothes, and Family had to watch the promenade and posing. After adding the new outfits to her closet, she’d magnanimously ‘lets go of a few things for the younger sisters.)
True Fact: Boot Camp was the first time in my life I was head to toe in Brand New Clothes.
So the universe gave me a moment to >>immerse<< !
The in-game designers were trying to appeal to “western’ cultures with the first few fashion releases.
Permeability the Other Way
I can’t. I just can NOT. I won’t do it. Stilettos in a dungeon crawl?? Teddies and stilettos… while fighting undead or demonic hordes?? … Maybe the Lollipop heels… I love the fur coat, but the rest of the outfit doesn’t work in the terrain that the coat suggests.
The game designers got some push back and opened a contest for fashion. I entered a few ideas. Please Enjoy.
