Joey’s Involuntary Journeys
Now Joey
was a grizzly, through and through—
Born where the giant cedars grew.
But his fur was pale as mountain snow,
Folks said, “He’s a polar—
and don’t belong this low.”
So They…
Snatched him up and took him north,
Four thousand miles from his cave of birth.
First time out was a hundred miles,
Past the spruce and the frozen isles.
They let him loose by Fairbanks way,
and Joey was headed south the very next day.
Loping over the ice and stone
Nothing stopping him from going HOME.
Gone for months, Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!
But his fur was pale as mountain snow,
Folks said, “He’s a polar—
and don’t belong this low.”
So They….
Snatched him up and took him north,
Four thousand miles from his cave of birth.
Second time north by two hundred miles more,
They flew him out where the ravens soar.
He saw no salmon, heard no stream,
So Joey was headed south and left that Arctic dream.
Loping over the ice and stone
Nothing stopping him
from going home.
Gone for months,
Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!
But his fur was pale as mountain snow,
Folks said, “He’s a polar—
and don’t belong this low.”
So they…
Snatched him up and took him north,
Four thousand miles from his cave of birth.
Third time’s charm—to Ellesmere gone,
Past the glaciers by a frozen dawn.
They said, “No way he’s coming back!”
But Joey walked home down the tundra track.
Loping over the ice and stone
Nothing stopping him
from going home.
Gone for months,
Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!
But his fur was pale as mountain snow,
Folks said, “He’s a polar—
and don’t belong this low.”
So they…
Snatched him up and took him north,
Four thousand miles from his cave of birth.
Fourth time far—to the polar shore,
Where the sun don’t set and the icebergs roar.
Past the edge of the hunting grounds,
But Joey said, “Boys, I’m southward bound.”
Loping over the ice and stone
Nothing stopping him
from going home.
Gone for months,
Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!
But his fur was pale as mountain snow,
Folks said, “He’s a polar—
and don’t belong this low.”
So They….
Snatched him up and took him north,
Four thousand miles from his cave of birth.
Fifth time taken, they said, “That’s it!
He’s at the top—he’ll have to quit.”
Where the north star sits and the compass spins,
But Joey came back where the salmon swim.
Loping over the ice and stone
Nothing stopping him
from going home.
Gone for months,
Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!
Nothing stopping him
from going home.
Gone for months,
Then here he comes!
Just in time for the salmon run!

I resisted adding the Panda. I could not justify it lyrically.
Thanks for watching!
