The guys upstairs decided to change things around?
They take everything you think you know
about what you’re doing and just reshuffle the deck?
Whether you agreed to mulligan or not.
[o.o]
The term “mulligan” actually comes from golf, not card games, which makes its pairing with “reshuffle the deck” kind of an interesting mixed metaphor!
Mulligan – A do-over shot in golf, taken without penalty. The origin is debated, but it likely dates to the 1920s-1940s and is attributed to a golfer named David Mulligan (or possibly John A. “Buddy” Mulligan) who regularly took second shots off the first tee at his club. The term spread through golf culture and eventually became slang for any second chance or do-over.
Reshuffle the deck – This one does come from card games. It means to reorganize or start fresh, mixing up the existing elements into a new arrangement. In card games like Magic: The Gathering, you might “mulligan” (redraw your starting hand) if you don’t like your initial draw, which would involve reshuffling.
So your original usage actually bridges both meanings pretty well – the idea that someone forced a do-over (mulligan) by reorganizing everything (reshuffle), whether you wanted that second chance or not. The phrases come from different games but work together to capture that sense of unwanted disruption and reset.
^-.-^ Might be Magic. I’ve built a few decks. Invented a few tricks!
BTW New Map Challenge Theme: Amusement. The golf course was the first idea that popped into my head. Thinking Caddy Shack and the gofer at the end. “I’m all-right! Don’t nobody worry ‘bout me!”
I was several hours into learning the intricacies of watering systems, specialty seeds, and sand trap physics… when It really sunk in how much I would have to build in Meshy to pull it off… and I didn’t have that many tokens left since I had that Mammoth idea. (note: Still can not pull off Giant Ground Sloth…mutations just get weirder.)
Re-shuffle.
So the Team at my hang-out Dungeon Alchemist are re-shuffling the deck. Shifting the responsibilities of the host and Community Manager. Hearing similar with my son, and other employed people … you know friends. The higher ups don’t actually know what’s happening below.
My training was a little bit more…
Every Bolt, Every Weld.
[o.o] Ah! Said like a Captain.
A ship’s captain (and officers) are indeed expected to have thorough, working knowledge of the entire vessel and be able to step into any role if needed. This isn’t just romantic tradition – it’s practical necessity when you’re at sea and lives depend on it. Even more so for submariners.
The captain needs to be able to:
- Inspect every system and know if something’s wrong
- Understand the function of every piece of equipment
- Step into any crew position in an emergency
- Know what each crew member does and whether they’re doing it correctly
This comes from centuries of maritime practice where a ship at sea is isolated and self-contained. The captain can’t call corporate headquarters or wait for an expert. Officers work their way up through ranks precisely so they know the ship from keel to mast.
So when the “guys upstairs” reshuffle everything without understanding what’s actually happening on deck – they’re violating that basic principle. They’re making decisions about systems and people they don’t actually understand at the operational level.
^-.-^ No more Office Hours on Discord.
And No more Dungeon Alchemist Challenge.
Sad day indeed.
Challenges are the best way to learn.
Turn and Face.
Con-front.
[o.o] Business model thinking sees community as “consumer/customer.” They don’t realize they’re actually shutting down the ecosystem that keeps the product alive AND Growing.
^-.-^ Stauuuuup! Don’t get all rant-y.
On Mondays (same hours) similar theme (map class) and On Saturday (same hours) New Theme. The word is… “Variety show”… !!
“It’s time to play the music
It’s time to light the lights…”
They might need some music videos!! 😀
Time to see Opportunity.
Not loss.
Opportunity is letting the community step into leading and growing their own.
Fields are established. The soil has been working well for years!
Very fertile ground.
All the community has to do is pick a crop to start Growing it:
Streaming, Hosting, Map reviews. New tricks. Interviews.
(No mic or camera here… I’m not geared up for it yet…
Give me a minute!)
I know it’s something I ought to try,
because
It scares me,
and that is just not rational.
I should Not be intimidated by a microphone.
So let’s see I what can do…
Stepping up Because there is an Invitation to be something More than I am right now.
