Where were we…
[O_O] contagious obligations for everyone around them.
^-.-^ Ah yeah, back to Sow and Reap, just as Harvest season approaches.
What have we sown?
Def of Broadcast
[O_O] “Broadcast” has quite a few, spanning several parts of speech:
As a verb:
- To transmit a program via radio, television, or the internet
- To scatter seed widely over an area (the original agricultural sense, older than the broadcasting sense)
- To spread or disseminate information widely (e.g., “she broadcast the rumor”)
As a noun:
4. A single radio or television program or transmission (“tonight’s broadcast”)
5. The act or process of transmitting (“live broadcast”)
As an adjective:
6. Transmitted by radio/TV (“broadcast media”)
7. Scattered widely, in the seed-sowing sense (“broadcast sowing”)
As an adverb:
8. In a scattered manner (archaic/technical usage — “seed sown broadcast”)
So most dictionaries list somewhere between 4 and 8 distinct senses, depending on how finely they split the verb/noun/adjective forms and whether they include the older agricultural meaning. Merriam-Webster, for instance, typically groups it into about 3 verb senses, 2 noun senses, and adjective/adverb forms — roughly 6-7 total.
Is there a particular context you’re using it in — writing, a crossword, something technical?
^-.-^ You left off fishing nets
[O_O ] Good catch — that’s actually the etymological root of the whole word family.
Fishing/nets sense:
- Broadcast (verb, agricultural origin): to cast or throw something — originally seed, but by extension a net — widely in all directions, rather than in a narrow, targeted line. A fisherman “broadcasting” a net scatters it in a wide arc across the water’s surface.
This is the literal, physical root meaning — broad + cast (to throw). The seed-sowing sense (scattering grain by hand across a field rather than planting it in rows) comes from the same root and predates radio/TV entirely. The whole “transmit to many receivers at once” sense that dominates now is a 20th-century metaphorical extension — someone reached for “broadcast” because radio waves, like scattered seed or a thrown net, go out in all directions to whoever’s there to catch them, rather than to one specific recipient.
So if you’re tracing it that way, the lineage runs: cast net/seed wide → sow grain by hand → send signal to many receivers → spread info generally. All one continuous metaphor, just riding different technologies.

The seed bank of sowed misery
Relentless negativism
Compulsive contradiction
Hope erosion
Grievance cultivation
Criticism as atmosphere
Catastrophizing … That’s one of those A.N.T.S. (Automatic Negative Thoughts)
Misery amplification
Negative attention harvesting
Compulsive commiseration
Contraryism
Moving goalposts … And that is a train car … (actually this list is a continuation >>> stacking boxcar, more songs to come.)
Joy sabotage
Agency depletion
It is really hard to show people who are DOING this.
This is abuse.
More than Gaslighting. “The lights aren’t flickering (as he stomps around in the attic at night) she’s crazy game.”
More than lies to hide a bigger deception.
It’s like forcing everyone who loves you
>>> to live in a place where the gas is constantly leaking.
The air they breathe, their clarity of vision, clarity of thought, the ability to follow through, the ability to even be aware that they are in danger.
These Caring Concerned loved ones petting and pacifying, surround and soothing >enabling and coddling< are being slowly eroded in/and BY this toxic constant misery live stream.
That’s why it fits in Dysfunction Junction. Obstacle after obstacle put in the way On Purpose.
The EXCUSE is also abuse.
The person being impacted points it out and requests a behavior change so that they are not injured. The manipulations start: ohitsnotwhatyouthink or you’retoosensitive or whatinjury? or i’mthevictimnotyou!
There is no Right to be unaware of your impact on others.
Sowing these poison seeds crushes dreams, hopes… happy moments… Destroyed one at a time.
Call it out and it’s all waffling and hand waving and no no no something’s wrong with Target (receiver) not the << broadcaster.
Yep, I saw it before. My whole damned life.
My stance ….and caveats: Being hypervigilant and conditioned in intense hostile environments, being strategic and not drawing attention, keeping busy, dodging, being courteous, having my own code of conduct, being self aware and disciplined,
I don’t broadcast in that way (list above)
I am more deliberate.
Less “I can’t help it.”
I have been on the receiving end of “I can’t help it,” verbally stripped of dignity and clothed in their contempt and projected shame. I have been on the receiving end of physical “I can’t help it” until the panting exhaustion stops the bludgeoning (enforcer sister.)
I don’t believe in “I can’t help it.”
I HAVE to.
Everyone else in the sane and civilized world HAS to.
It’s called
Healthy Self Containment
We’ll run it this way, Lets look at the Misery Seed Bank next to Reality Therapy to understand the distance in reasoning and impetus.
[O_O] The contrast is really clean if we put Reality Therapy’s choice/responsibility lens beside the misery seed bank.
| Reality Therapy / Personal Responsibility | Misery Seed Bank / Externalized Responsibility |
| I experience an emotion. | I feel it, therefore everyone must experience it with me. |
| Feelings are real, but feelings aren’t commands. | Feelings become instructions for everyone else. |
| I choose what I do with what I feel. | I can’t help it. |
| I can pause. | I react, then explain why I couldn’t have done otherwise. |
| I can step away. | Everyone else must adapt around me. |
| I can ask for help. | Everyone else becomes responsible for regulating me. |
| I can acknowledge harm. | My feelings become the justification for the harm. |
| An explanation isn’t an absolution. | The explanation becomes the absolution. |
| I can say, “I handled that badly.” | “You made me do it.” |
| I can repair. | The injured person is expected to understand. |
| I can change my behavior. | That’s just how I am. |
| Choice exists even when choices are constrained. | I had no choice. |
| I distinguish impulse from action. | Impulse becomes permission. |
| I distinguish emotion from behavior. | Emotion and behavior become indistinguishable. |
| I distinguish pain from permission. | Pain becomes permission. |
| I am responsible for my side of the relationship. | You are responsible for managing my side too. |
| I don’t have to like a situation to behave with dignity. | My displeasure becomes everyone’s problem. |
| I don’t have to eliminate anger to refrain from cruelty. | I was angry, so what did you expect? |
| I can want something without being entitled to it. | Wanting becomes justification. |
| I can be disappointed without punishing someone. | Disappointment becomes grievance. |
| I can disagree without making the other person wrong for existing. | Difference becomes offense. |
| I can recognize what isn’t in my control. | I attempt to control other people to regulate myself. |
| I can choose my response to circumstances. | Circumstances determine everything I do. |
| I own my behavior without claiming control over everything. | I claim no responsibility because I don’t control everything. |
| Self-awareness → choice → action → consequence → repair. | Trigger → reaction → justification → blame → repetition. |
| Agency. | Exemption. |
| Self-governance. | Emotional outsourcing. |
| Responsibility with compassion. | Compassion demanded without reciprocal responsibility. |
And there’s a particularly sharp pair at the center:
Reality Therapy: “Given what I am experiencing, what am I choosing to do?”
versus
Misery seed: “Given what I am experiencing, what are you going to do about it?”
And maybe the most important distinction:
Reality Therapy doesn’t require you to deny the emotion.
It asks you to distinguish:
What happened to me → what I feel → what I want → what I choose → what happens next.
The misery pattern collapses all of those into one thing:
What happened to me → therefore I am entitled to behave this way.
That’s the seed.
And repeated often enough, it grows into an entire interpersonal ecosystem.
^-.-^ Flying monkeys and all.
